What
We Do
Consumer Support and Referral
ACCD is a consumer-directed organization that believes people with disabilities know their situations best. We believe it is essential that people with disabilities are listened to and that they receive the support they need to participate fully and equally in society. This is why our resource officers provide up-to-date information to individuals and organizations regarding programs and/or services that support people with disabilities and their families. Currently, consumer support and referral occur through the following activities:
- Referrals (telephone, in person, e-mail, fax, letter)
- Individual support
- Group support
Referrals
Each week, ACCD receives approximately 35 phone calls, faxes, letters, and e-mail messages from individuals or organizations seeking information on disabilities issues or programs. ACCD provides the required information or, if necessary, refers individuals to an organization or government department that can help. ACCD’s 1-800 number is listed in the phone book in Edmonton, Calgary, Lethbridge, Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Grande Prairie, and Fort McMurray.
Individual Support

- Writing letters on behalf of the individual
- Listening to individuals who need someone to talk to
- Providing assistance with resume writing
- Helping to access disability services programs
- Advocating for transportation options in small towns
- Assisting individuals to find caregivers
Group Support
ACCD receives requests from groups seeking assistance with disability-related issues or programs. ACCD works with these groups to resolve their situations. Over the years, we have provided the following types of group support:
- Advocating for re-opening a therapeutic pool used by seniors
- Assisting with the AISH repayment settlement process
- Organizing a group to attend the legislature during the review of the income benefits programs.
